High forced labour risk in Cocoa. Industry needs to step up.

Chocolate produced with cocoa from Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, which jointly produce two thirds of the world’s cocoa, is at high risk of being tainted by forced labour and child labour, according to new research. Within the cocoa growing areas surveyed in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, an estimated 30,000 adults and children were in forced labour in that industry, between 2013 and 2017.

United States is the world’s largest importer of goods at-risk of being manufactured through forced labor. One in every 800 people in the United States is working under forced labor conditions – new data revealed today.

More than 136,000 people are living in modern slavery in the United Kingdom.

The scale of modern slavery within the UK is much higher than previously estimated, a new report launched today has found. The 2018 Global Slavery Index, the most comprehensive ever study on the issue, estimates that there are 136,000 people living in modern slavery in the UK today, equating to 2.1 victims for every 1,000 people in the country.

Developed nations far more exposed to slavery within their borders than previously thought.

The number of people falling victim to modern slavery in developed countries is far higher than previously thought, shifting pressure on those countries to step up their efforts to combat the problem, a landmark report shows. The 2018 Global Slavery Index shows 403,000 people are living in modern slavery in the US, or 1 in 800 Americans, seven-times higher than previous estimates.
